UK Blog Awards #UKBA16

I’ve recently returned from one of my blog highlights of the year, the fantastic UK Blog Awards which I was SHORTLISTED for as a top ten travel blogger! I attended the awards with my best friend and had a fantastic evening; the event was super-duper cool and was held in the stunning Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel. Organised in association with Debenhams, Odeon and Hills Balfour, the awards were also sponsored by EventTrees who transformed the ballroom into an enchanted forest wonderland to commemorate Roald Dahl’s 100th birthday year and the release of his latest film, The BFG. Although I didn’t win the coveted Best Travel Blogger award I still had an amazing time…here are my best bits!

Got my best dress on and my best friend by my side… UK Blog Awards 2016 let's DO thisssss! 👯🎉 #UKBA16

Hosted in association with Odeon, the awards were sponsored by numerous companies across the various industries the bloggers were being judged from. We had Debenhams representing the fashion and beauty section, Hills Balfour representing the travel section and BMW flying the flag for the automotive section. Some fellow bloggers were even chauffeured by BMW to and from the venue (lucky sods!) as a courtesy package – unfortunately I wasn’t able to experience this but, as we were staying in the hotel itself I didn’t think I could complain too much 😉

The venue

The awards were held in the swanky Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel which I had the pleasure of reviewing during my stay. The hotel is one of the largest in London, with over 1000 rooms laid out across 14 floors, and views across the whole of Westminster. With the event kicking off at 7pm sharp, we made our way from our room on level 12, down past reception to level minus two, the ballroom, where we were greeted by staff members and huge Blog Award banners – we definitely knew we were in the right place!

ukblogawards1

Prosecco and canapes were thrust upon us as we entered the ballroom, and we were snapped by photographers and interviewed by journalists straightaway – oh the joys of arriving early! 😉 We had the whole of the ballroom floor and three large rooms to use throughout the evening which made us feel that extra bit special. Entertainment came in the form of a pop up cinema by Odeon (the popcorn was amazing) and a bubble show by Bubbleinc – such a fun concept and, seeing as I’m always in my own little bubble, I thought I might as well be in a REAL LIFE ONE!

Quite literally in my own little bubble ☁ ☁ #UKBA16

The speeches

The evening was kicked off with a welcome from our host, Kate Russell, journalist, reporter and author who won a UK Blog Award herself at the 2015 ceremony. Kate told us how her profile in the blogosphere has been heightened since her award win last year and how important it is for brands and bloggers to connect with each other in the ever changing world of social media.

Gemma Newton, founder of the event, was next to speak and she gave us a real insight into the blogging industry and how important it is becoming in today’s media. Gemma’s inspiring speech made all us bloggers think and take stock – she’s standing up for US and helping US to get recognised by experts, brands and industry professionals.. here’s to the gaining even more power in the industry over the next few years – bloggers unite!

The award categories

There were 18 categories in total, from weddings and photography to beauty and fashion to travel and lifestyle, with ten shortlisted bloggers in each sector for the individual and company entrants. There were over 150 bloggers nominated in each sector, so to be shortlisted in the top ten is massive achievement in itself!! I was lucky enough to be shortlisted in the individual travel section along with fellow TBloggers Vicki and Chris from Eat Sleep Love Travel, Lucy from Faraway Lucy and Ella from I am Ella. It was so strange to see all our names lit up on the big screen!

travelbloggers

Lucy and I met each other at Traverse16 – we got on like a house on fire and have remained firm friends ever since! This lovely lady was voted Highly Commended in our travel category and I was SO PROUD of her! Congratulations Luce you fully deserved the recognition – love you lots! <3

The dress code

Loved the dress I wore for my awards do on Friday.. Thankyou so much @officialrarelondon 👯👗 #london #rarefashion

We were under strict instructions to dress up as glam as we could when attending the awards; for the girls it was either cocktail or floor length dresses and for the boys it was suits all round! I’m so tiny that floor length dresses totally DROWN me so I thought I should opt for fun cocktail number to make me look at least a little glamourous! I chose a sassy little red dress by Rare London, I loved the fit and the style and felt it suited me down to the ground. Thank you Rare for a beautiful dress… I felt a million dollars in it!!

The social media exposure

Soo I got this little invite thru the post today.. 8 days and I'll be there! @UKblogawards #UKBA16 ✉🎉 #finalist

I have had an ENORMOUS amount of new interest in my blog since I announced that I was shortlisted for this years awards. I’ve been featured in two newspapers and have been interviewed by a local TV company to share my blog awards story. I’ve gained hundreds of new followers across all forms of social media and have made virtual friends with so many people! The weekly #bloghour Twitter chat has also meant that I’ve been actively involved with speaking to event organisers, sponsors, industry professionals and fellow bloggers in the run up to the big night. Thankfully #bloghour will still be running every Tuesday at 9pm so I’ll still get my weekly blogger fix! I’m so grateful for all the exposure that UK Blog Awards has thrown my way and I’ve absolutely LOVED being a part of such a fantastic experience.

As I’m sure you can tell, I had a truly wonderful time and am already keen to enter into next year’s awards in order to be re-shortlisted; my next aim is to WIN one of those shiny trophies! A big thank you to everyone for making the event such a success, from the hotel staff to the wonderful organisers. I left with a massive smile on my face, a goody bag and finalist certificate in my hand and a giddy feeling in my heart, although I’m pretty sure that had something to do with all the free Prosecco…. UK Blog Awards, it’s been a blast!

October Newsletter: Autumn Has Arrived!

12047454_10207527519167522_1046119799_n

Hi everyone,

So firstly I wanted to apologise for the huuuuuge delay in writing this up and my lack of blog posts since September! I’ve been super busy since I returned from my recent holiday away to Budapest that I’ve barely had time to think! Now that the nights are getting darker and the days are getting colder, it feels as if autumn is well and truly here and its given me chance to get myself a little more organised. I thought I’d better give you all an overview of what’s been happening lately so my new blog feature, a monthly newsletter, should explain it nicely! Here goes…

12071608_10207531481146569_1927087826_n

Budapest was a brilliant place to visit for my 5th European city break in the past 2 years; its full of culture, character and charm and provided the perfect getaway for me and my sister. We spent three nights and four days in the city which gave us plenty of time to see the sights, explore the little side streets and indulge in some Hungarian history. I’ll be writing up my Budapest adventure as soon as possible, so watch this space!…

The day after I returned from my holiday I whizzed straight off to Northampton to see one of my best friends get married. She held her reception at the beautiful Dodford Manor, a converted countryside barn which was simply stunning. Everyone had a brilliant time, and the bride and groom looked totally gorgeous! Congrats Mr & Mrs Nicholson, and thank you for letting me be a part of your special day! <3

Last weekend I headed into London for the day to review some of the best restaurants and bars in trendy Westminster. I hadn’t been to the capital since June so I was dying to go back and this gave me the perfect excuse to visit! As many of my regular readers know, I’ve been contributing for global online magazine The Culture Trip since the summer and was delighted to be asked to take part in their new Neighbourhood project. The task involves taking an area of London and posting about the best bars, restaurants, brunches and things to see and do in said area. I chose to take on Westminster, Covent Garden and Canary Wharf and couldn’t wait to get to work!

As part of my research I set up meetings with bar and restaurant managers for a few of my chosen establishments and had the pleasure of being toured around the buildings, interviewing the managers and even being treated to a few free drinks… the perks of being a travel blogger! I’m currently busy typing up my posts for The Culture Trip, all of which are due to be completed by mid December so my works are pretty much all scheduled in between now and Christmas.. it’ll be here before we know it…scary stuff! In between interviewing lovely managers, blagging free drinks and being toured around some beautiful places I managed to squeeze in some sightseeing with my close friend and we even had time to enjoy a scrummy ice cream or two at the AMAZING Haagen Daas Ice Cream Parlour in Leicester Square. I’ll social share my Culture Trip posts once they’re live and will write up my interviews as soon as I can!

This weekend has been a little more chilled, thankfully, so I’ve had chance to spend some quality time with my family as we strolled around one of our favourite local haunts, beautiful Blenheim Palace in nearby Woodstock. Our westie, Cassie, absolutely adores running around the grounds and we wandered around the lake with her whilst staring at the grand architecture of the Palace itself. View one of my previous blog posts to find out a little more about the birthplace of one of Britain’s most loved characters, Sir Winston Churchill.

My final piece of news in this month’s newsletter is that I’ve been asked to write a series of Destination Guides for the brilliant ABN Save Travel Group. Travel writer Breanna Wilson has been working with me closely to edit and publish my guides and it’s been great to get another piece of my work published on a more global scale. Like The Culture Trip, ABN Save have asked me to write weekly articles on some of the hottest city break destinations. As most of you lovely readers will know, my blog focuses on European city breaks and so I’m delighted to be able to share some of my knowledge and handy tips with a much wider audience. My first post for ABN Save was published last week, click here to read my Paris Destination Guide. Next up is Barcelona and Reykjavik so I’ll be social sharing those in due course.

As a side note, I’m also running The Big 5K Fun Run in aid of The Pituitary Foundation so I’ll be in Milton Keynes for that next Sunday. I’m running for The Pituitary Foundation as they have been a charity that have supported me since my prolactinoma diagnosis 5 years ago. Please visit my JustGiving page to read my story and help me raise lots of money and awareness for this fantastic charity. Thank you in advance to anyone that can find it in their heart to donate! <3

That pretty much completes my first newsletter for this month, I told you I’ve been busy! I’ll be writing like crazy over the next few weeks and I have a few more little trips planned between now and the end of the year so, as always, I’ll remember to keep you posted! My next write up will be my beautiful Budapest trip… enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Day Out: Cheltenham Spa

IMG-20150429-WA0008

Hi everyone,

Last week me and my best friend had an afternoon off work and were at a loss as to what to do so we headed to the nearby town of Cheltenham Spa for a lovely afternoon of shopping and lunching! Cheltenham is around an hour’s drive from Oxford and London and is a pretty Cotswolds town full of high street and designer shops, bars, cafes and restaurants so there really is something on offer for everyone! Upon arrival we headed to cafe for some lunch before hitting the shops. HMV, New Look, River Island and more are at the top of the high street and you can then work your way down towards the likes of Topshop, Boots, Monsoon and Accessorize before ending up at the large flagship Primark store.

20150429_161640promenade_shopping_cheltenham

Regents Arcade and are two of the indoor shopping centres which arent to be missed as they are home to a number of independent boutique shops as well as large well known chains such as Debenhams and TK Maxx. Don’t forget to be inside Regents Arcade on the hour to watch the famous bubble clock chime! This brought back many childhood memories for me and my friend as we’ve been going there since we were little!

20150429_14171820150429_141732untitled

Down on The Promenade is where you’ll find the designer and higher end stores such as Jack Wills, FCUK and LK Bennett. The Prom is situated on a long street leading back up to the town centre and is really beautiful especially in the summer sunshine! I’d recommend heading to Cheltenham Spa for an alternative day out to the busier cities of Oxford and London- you’ll thoroughly enjoy being away from the hustle and bustle but there will be plenty of things to keep you and the whole family entertained!

I hope you’ve enjoyed this post – I’ve got a special birthday announcement coming soon as my blog turns one in a couple of weeks time!

Throwback Thursday: Paphos, Cyprus

114424

Welcome to this month’s Throwback Thursday feature!

I’ve not done one of these for a while but I’m super excited to be blogging about one of my favourite places in the world! Paphos is truly a beautiful holiday destination which is perfect for families, friends and couples alike looking for a relaxing break away in the sun. I traveled here in June 2013 for a weeks holiday and had a fantastic time, so here’s my best bits!….

The Journey

1

You can fly to Cyprus from pretty much any airport in the UK but I chose to go with Thomas Cook on a package holiday from East Midlands airport which offered great flight times at very reasonable prices. The average flight time is 4 and a half hours on the way there and just over five hours on the way back. These were actually the longest flights I’ve ever been on as I’m yet to venture out of Europe (sigh!) but both journeys went really quickly and we were well looked after by our cabin crew.

The Hotel

4  5

55    14

We had booked into the four star Avanti Village in the heart of Paphos on a self catering basis for the duration of our stay. The complex was beautiful with a large fresh water pool, lazy river, pretty gardens and plenty of activities on offer. Our first floor one bedroom studio apartment was spacious and clean with good quality facilities and was situated at the front of the complex so we had a lovely view of the pool. We ate at the snack bar a couple of times and the food was great. I particularly enjoyed the swim up bar in the pool which was brilliant, a real novelty for me.

15 16 17 18  57

There were a few restaurants (BBQ grill & an Italian) to the rear of the complex if you wanted to eat closer to home as the hotel was around a 30min walk from the centre of Paphos. If you dont fancy walking it the buses in Paphos are amazing, 1Euro each way per person, or 3Euro per person for a full day ticket so you could hop and hop off wherever you wanted! We did this a couple of times and uses our day tickets to go to Coral Bay, the Old Town/Market and into Paphos Harbour when we were feeling more tired! This actually worked well for us as we liked to be away from the hustle and bustle. The scenic walk along the coast was beautiful each night and we got to see the sun go down day after day which was a real treat. You can read my Trip Advisor review of the Avanti Village here: http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g190384-d622520-r164249468-Avanti_Village-Paphos_Paphos_District.html#REVIEWS

The Resort

8    9

The resort is situated around Paphos Castle and Harbour, so everything is all in one place. There are tonnes of souvenir shops, bars, cafe’s and restaurants so we were never stuck for something to do. It’s well worth visiting Paphos Castle and having a wander round as the views over the harbour from the top are truly stunning.

12  13

As we were on a self catering holiday, we chose to eat dinner out every night and I was so glad we did this as it gave us the opportunity to try out loads of beautiful restaurants. As is expected, the closer you are to the sea the more expensive the meals are, but you get what you pay for and the experience of enjoying an evening  of food and drink whilst watching the waves roll in was something we didn’t want to pass up on! As the centre of Paphos is situated around its harbour, the beach was a bit further away and wasn’t the focal point of the resort which actually made a nice change for me as I often get bored on beaches! The beach wasn’t typically long and sandy, but it was pleasant enough and was a great place to watch the sun set over the nearby harbour.

6 7

Price wise, the restaurants in Paphos are a little on the expensive side but again it does depend where you go and what you eat. An average meal and drinks for a couple was around 40-50 euros which is higher than what I’ve previously paid in places like Spain, Greece and The Canaries. On our last night we spent €80 on a posh dinner and cocktails by the sea which was a lot of money but it’s nice to be able to push the boat out once in a while! I can see how it would be costly to feed a family each night at this resort so hotels offering all inclusive or full board deals might be worth considering for larger parties.

22 50

Nightlife in Paphos is great, there’s always something going on! There were a number of clubs, our favourites were Flairs and Linekars, which did great drinks deals and planned party nights. Hen do’s and stag weekend’s were arriving for the start of the season and we were told it gets extremely busy during the main summer months. For a more chilled night out there are plenty of bars on offer if you’re not looking to go clubbing.

56

Day Trips

27 29 54

There’s tonnes of excursions on offer in Paphos, from boat trips and jeep safaris to horse riding and wine tasting, there really is something for everyone. We did three day trips in total, one day exploring the old town and the markets, another on a half day boat trip and one on an all day jeep safari.

19

The old town was beautiful with lots of historical buildings and places of interest together with panoramic views across the resort. We spent time rambling down little side streets exploring the hidden gems and grabbed a few bargains at the local markets before catching the bus back to the harbour. As mentioned above, the buses in Paphos are brilliant and are excellent value for money, a great way of exploring further afield. As the old town was away from the sea it got incredibly hot and humid so just be wary of that if, like me, you struggle with the heat! June was a great time to visit Cyprus as the temp reached around 26-28 degrees so it wasn’t too hot. We were told that it gets as hot as 35 degrees during July and August as its peak season so I’d recommend avoiding these months if you want the weather to be a little more bearable.

515244 45  49

The half day boat trip with Paphos Sea Cruises was a brilliant day out and probably the highlight of the holiday. We boarded the luxurious Ocean Flyer from the harbour at midday and cruised along the West Coast of Paphos sailing the Mediterranean sea towards the nearby beautiful Coral Bay beach. There were a couple of swimming stops along the way and a buffet was served on board along with as much drink as you could handle- this was included in the ticket price of €40pp which we thought was great value for money. The cruise lasted for four hours and you could jump straight on to an evening one if you wanted to continue with your day at sea- with dinner, musical entertainment and fireworks on offer we were hugely tempted!

23

The last day trip we did was the Akamas jeep safari, something I had never done before and it was truly amazing! We were in a group of around 8 people plus our driver/guide who took us high into the mountains and showed us a completely different side of Cyprus. We started with the magical sea caves which were breathtakingly beautiful and then made our way up to Avakas Gorge where we trekked through a pretty waterfall.

26 31 32 33

After a short stop for lunch (included in €35 ticket price) we were taken to a couple of small fishing villages, Polis and Latchi, one of which was close to Turtle Beach but unfortunately we didn’t spot any of the turtles as it was out of hatching season! We were told July- September was the best time to catch them. Finally we headed to the Baths of Aphrodite where the famous Goddess of Love once bathed with her soul mate Adonis. On our journey back down to Paphos we passed through Greek and Turkish villages which were like ghost towns due to the after effects of one of the wars, our guide explained the history of the town’s and it was very moving. We were dropped back at our hotel by about 5pm and were shattered after a long days exploring! I’d definitely recommend this excursion to make the most of your time in Cyprus.

36 37 40  394241

So that’s this month’s Throwback Thursday finished – have you ever been to Cyprus or ever wanted to go? Feel free to ask any questions you might have, I’d be delighted to help!

My next post will be a short write up on a recent day out to nearby Cheltenham, so watch out for this coming soon!
